With more than 35 albums to his credit, R. Carlos Nakai is both prolific and multi-talented, having performed with a wide variety of artists in many styles, but Canyon Trilogy may be the purest representation of his work. Performed solo on a cedar flute with subtle echo added, and some tasteful multi-tracking in places, it’s easy to be swept away by these 17 songs, making it ideal for massage or meditation. The natural range of the cedar flute is limited compared to most other familiar wind instruments, but the soothing tone Nakai achieves and his masterful playing and level of imagination make the album work beautifully. Though he has a solid understanding of Native American music, Nakai is not a strict traditionalist; all of the songs here are original compositions. And still the music sounds as ancient as the hills and yet contemporary, giving it a rich complexity and organic flow that’s sure to resonate with listeners.
