Details
[Edit]R.E.M.’s association with Warner Bros. Records exemplifies the reasons the label was long regarded as a jewel in the rock world. The band was left to create adventurous work that moved against trends, ultimately convincing audiences to go their way with a series of multiplatinum sellers. In Time surveys 15 years in the group’s life, bringing together moments crystalline (“Losing My Religion,” whose gift of an old Southern idiom to wider consciousness retains its vitality), grinding (“What’s the Frequency Kenneth,” from the brilliant sonic left-turn Monster) and loopily affirmative (“Stand”). Sequenced with a revelatory flair (as when the empathetic anthem “Everybody Hurts” is followed by Reveal’s gorgeous Pet Sounds knockoff “At My Most Beautiful”), these are often defining slices of pop that were welcomed with surprise and love. Two previously unheard tracks complete the set.
