[Edit]R Kelly is the undisputed master of modern bedroom music, and what he may lack in lyrical subtlety he more than makes up for in sheer charisma and an innate gift to make even the most over-the-top XXX jams relentlessly catchy. Black Panties is his 12th solo album over the course of 20+ years, and it finds Kels doing what he does best: melding one-track-mind subject matter with some of today's strongest production in R&B. He's overcome plenty of adversity during his long career (various legal issues, the infamous golden-shower video, throat surgery, etc.), yet he continues to get better with age. While his previous two releases (Love Letter and Write Me Back) flexed more of a classic vintage-soul style, here he's back in full-on club mode, sporting features from 2 Chainz, Ludacris, and Young Jeezy, plus production assistance from Bigg Makk, DJ Mustard, and Marz. While those who prefer less sex in their music may be unimpressed, most everybody else will find plenty to like here. "Crazy Sex," "Marry the P*ssy," and the single "Cookie" are all outstanding.
