There can never be enough ways around reviving a low-key pop/rock style with its roots in post-punk, so long as those variations are worth listening to. Happily, Rabbit in Red show that rather well on their self-titled EP, making them something like the more self-consciously mature equivalent to Bis. Not as hyperactive (or as annoying) as that crew, their ace in the hole is the unnamed female lead singer. While the male lead is okay enough, she's able to both croon and give a bit of sharp sass in rich, full tones reminiscent of the Young Marble Giants or the Marine Girls. The shuffling march into sparkling indie chime of "Bright Light of Noon" and the mournful horn break on the sweet and sad "Granted" are two moments of musical pleasure that stand out, and the occasional break into new wave keyboard or drum arrangements raise some smiles, too. There's even a cowbell on "Don't Go," and why not?
