English composer Rachel Portman defined the modern film-scoring language of autumn leaves and damp spirits. But it was comedy that helped her become the first woman to win a scoring Oscar (with 1996’s Emma). This vibrant, rhythmically sophisticated modern studio cocktail shows that Portman remains creatively restless. “I do enjoy popping from one kind of score to another,” she says, “and I’ve always been comfortable writing comedy music. Also, I was working with Jeremiah Chechik here, the guy who directed Benny & Joon, which I did the score for years ago. And that was lots of fun.
