Details
[Edit]The fourth volume of the Ralph Sutton Quartet with Ruby Braff is much like the earlier three, recorded at wife Sunnie Sutton's club Sunnie's Rendezvous during an extended stay in 1968. While the piano is still less than perfectly in tune, Sutton is like the past master Art Tatum at making the best of things. Unlike earlier volumes, this CD sticks more to familiar standards. Braff is a very lyrical player, as always, saying more with legato lines than other players can with a flurry of notes. Sutton's powerful stride piano is evident throughout the set. The exchanges between Sutton and Braff on "I Surrender Dear" are exhilarating, and the rhythm section of Milt Hinton and drummer Mousey Alexander is impeccable. Highly recommended!
