[Edit]Alabama fans may be somewhat surprised that the lead singer of the most successful band in the history of country music took nearly three decades to debut a solo album. Randy Owen's One On One is a ballad-heavy, country-pop affair and a companion disc to Owen's autobiography Born Country, which was released around the same time. From the catchy and upbeat opener "I Confess" followed by the Dolly Parton penned "Holding Everything" (which sounds somewhat like a mid '80s U2 hit, but with Meagan Mullins dueting), it's obvious that Owen is steering his first solo outing in a different direction from the stadium-friendly boogie-twang of Alabama's "Tennessee River" or beer joint weepers like "Why Lady Why." This crossover direction is partially due to the crystalline production of John Rich of Big & Rich fame, but Owen gets most of the credit, since he wrote or co-wrote the crux of these songs. The endearing "Braid My Hair" is one of many ballads built on an overflowing adoration for his daughter, while the title track muses on his marriage. Like many of his peers, Owen flirts with tropical twang on the Jimmy Buffett influenced "Barbados."
