Anyone who has ever spent time in Texas knows that living there demands a lot of driving. Randy Rogers Band’s 2010 album Burning the Day is so saturated in Texan atmosphere that opening with a song about driving makes perfect sense. “Interstate” chimes with red-dirt twang, uplifting melodies, and Rogers’ weathered and whiskey-pickled inflections. “Too Late for Goodbye” is a standout that’s sure to lure anyone attracted to Ryan Adams’ penchant for lovelorn narratives and Drive-By Truckers’ nitty-gritty country-rock. Similarly, the rootsy “Missing You Is More Than I Can Do” resonates richly with traditional instrumentation — the fiddles and pedal steel sound totally timeless. By the woeful ballad “Just Don’t Tell Me the Truth,” it’s evident that Rogers is well versed in heartbreak (touring to play over 200 shows a year takes its toll on romantic relationships), and the more upbeat “I Met Lonely Tonight” plays like its sequel as his dire loneliness provides a bittersweet contrast to the tune’s sparkling chorus.
