“This one goes out to all the outcasts,” shouts Rapture Ruckus’ Brad Dring during “In Crowd,” the opening track of Invader, Vol. 1. The core message of the New Zealand–based hip-hop/dance trio’s latest EP is one of unity and compassion, expressed with a fresh mix of attitude and uplift that keeps the music moving even as the lyrics look heavenward. As frontman, Dring combines a believer’s unshakable faith with a sly wit that both acknowledges and critiques secular pop culture—in “Everybody Gets Up,” for instance, he namechecks Miley Cyrus while contrasting the emptiness of the party life to the fulfillment of true love. Tracks like “Head Held High” and “Carry Me” (featuring a star turn by singer/songwriter David Dunn) reach out to the abused and forsaken with a message of hope. Musically, the EP builds on the diversity of the trio’s previous releases by adding a dash of power pop to “In Crowd” and “In This Together” and locking into a classic hip-hop groove on the title track. Rapture Ruckus may expand their U.S. following with this inspirational and energizing release.
