[Edit]A band that has made some impressive contributions to the Haitian music scene of the 1990s, Rara Machine uses a variety of influences advantageously on the captivating Break the Chain. Haiti's musical heritage (including the music used in voodoo ceremonies) is a key influence, but the band also draws on modern African pop and Afro-Caribbean calypso and soca, as well as Afro-American soul and funk on this infectious and uplifting music. The CD's informative liner notes point out the creative impact voodoo culture has had on Rara Machine founder Clifford Sylvain (who was 27 when it was recorded) and remind us that voodoo isn't necessarily connected to black magic and the occult (a widely held misconception outside of Haiti).
