To celebrate Ravi Shankar’s 90th birthday, Deutsche Grammophon has released this exquisite compilation of his complete recordings on their label. Though he was largely introduced to the Western music world by George Harrison, Shankar began studying the sitar in 1935 under Bengali sarodiya composer and multi-instrumentalist Allauddin Khan, one of the 20th century’s most renowned teachers of Indian classical music. The Master begins with a traditional raga, “Alap (Raga Jogeshwari),” where Shankar delicately intertwines hypnotic drones with melodically plucked sitar notes and sporadic string bending. As the buzzing gradually increases halfway through, Shankar’s modal tones approximate human inflections with the depth and range of their mystic resonance. A tabla groove picks up the pace with “Gat II (Tala: Ek-tal)
