Don't Mess with Our Routine follows closely on the heels of 2006's A Man and His Silvertone, so named because it spotlighted Ray Mason up close and personal, accompanied only by his trusty Silvertone guitar. This time around, Mason has invited the band back into the studio to put some meat on his compositions' bones, and he's even invited some of the same songs that he tackled on his own last time out. The same good-time feel permeates the album, which walks the Americana line between '60s pop melodicism (the ballads are particularly hooky), honky tonk country, bar band blues and steamy soul. With a full horn section dropping by every so often to add a funky Stax-esque foundation to the standard rock band configuration, Mason and his guitar — mostly understated here but always present and accounted for — easily navigate the leader's craftily written, clever tunes.
