Yet another overview of Red Foley's Decca years (1944-1951), this two-disc Proper "pair" set is the clear first choice, chronicling all of the singer's biggest hits of the era. "Smoke on the Water," "Old Shep," "New Pretty Blonde (Jolie Blon)," "Tennessee Saturday Night," "Chattanooga Shoe Shine Boy," and "Peace in the Valley" are all here, as well as "Freight Train Boogie," "Sugarfoot Rag," "Birmingham Bounce," "Hillbilly Fever," and many others. At 52 tracks, there's a lot of non-essential material here, but then, Foley's average stuff was still excellent, and the detailed liner notes (and low price!) make this a sweet deal.
