Anyone who's ever worn a retro three-button suit and ridden a vintage Italian scooter is likely already familiar with Reg King, who was once the frontman for British '60s mod band The Action. Although King left the band before it morphed into the post-mod prog-rockers Mighty Baby, members of both bands contributed to King's remarkable 1971 eponymous solo album. Anyone who ever fell in love with The Action’s 1968 recordings on Rolled Gold will feel right at home with the opening “Must Be Something Else Around.” It plays like an evolutionary step forward, as King blends elements of mod-flavored R&B and post-psychedelic textures to create a sound that could very well have inspired most of Paul Weller’s solo material. And if “You Go Have Yourself a Good Time” sounds a bit like Traffic-era Steve Winwood, that’s because King had Winwood play here, as well as Brian Auger and The Stones’ Mick Taylor. Of the seven bonus tracks, “Nobody Knows Where We Are” is unarguably the hardest-rocking and most soulful.
