After Poison the Well's rise to cult fame with their genre-defining work on The Opposite of December, many in the hardcore community veered off toward a new sound, combining the aggression of hardcore with the steel of heavy metal guitars and coating it all with a thick layer of insatiable melody. Many of the bands who tried to emulate this sound found mild success, yet few ever matched the intensity and passionate sincerity Poison the Well embodied. One group who could arguably match their thirst for emotional metalcore is Remembering Never. On their seven-song album, Suffocates My Words to You, there is a symbiotic relationship, as the hostility nurtures the melody, allowing it to emerge and highlight the album, while in turn the melody helps enhance the dark intensity on display. This give and take between the contrasting styles really creates quite a dynamic atmosphere, striking the listener simultaneously in the heart and the soul with wicked jabs that cut deep. Occasionally the singing and even the haphazard scream/singing matches that of Glassjaw's vocalist, Daryl Palumbo. This similarity allows for Remembering Never to appeal to a wider base, and songs such as "Meadows" and "Words" are genuinely devastating in their excellence. Jeremy Staska, who also happened to produce Poison the Well's Tear From the Red, has done an amazing job with production and has brought out the band's most impressive side. Suffocates My Words to You is a must-have album for any fan of metalcore, and it seems others feel the same way, as Ferret Records, home of Martyr A.D. and From Autumn to Ashes, amongst others, picked the group up as part of their roster. With this much talent, the sky's the limit. ~ Jason D. Taylor, Rovi
