Dérives is an early work but already marks Aubry's predilection for dance and theatrical work, in this case for a puppeteer, Philippe Genty (which is why the cover images look so eerie). Dérives translates to "adrift," and this is a very pleasant collection of quietly drifting pieces, mostly for keyboards with occasional guitar, banjo, and harmonica added for effect. Aubry's typical pattern is to set up a contrapuntal rhythmic pattern with simulated strings, then to put a leading melodic figure with piano. There are two songs in this collection, one completely in French and sung by Aubry, and the other in both French and English, sung by Katy Deville. Aubry's harmonic structures continue the pattern established in his other works, gentle progressions in mostly minor keys. The rhythmic interest comes from the counterpoint, and there is sparing use of percussion.
