Details
[Edit]Renz Verano released his debut album, Renz Verano, in 1995, and each of the album's ten songs is a ballad. Verano has a fine voice, and sings in a sincere, passionate manner. Six of the album's ten songs are adaptations of international songs, but contain new lyrics written in Tagalog, the Philippines' national language. Filipinos are quite fond of American/European music, and remakes of this type are popular, if not very original.
There is a reworking of Bryan Adams's "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman" but titled here as "Siya Ang Babae" (She Is the Girl). Usually, remakes of this type are a waste of time, but Verano sings in a compelling manner and makes the song enjoyable. He bases his interpretation on Adams's original version. Other adaptations are of Jon Bon Jovi's "Always" and "This Ain't a Love Song," as well as remakes of three other international songs: "I Can Love You Like That," "You're the Star," and "That's Why (You Go Away)." While the remakes are the best songs, the original material has something to offer, including "Puso Ko'y Sumisigaw" (My Heart Is Shouting) and "Love Me." Still, a listener might think that the Filipino material is used to fill time between the international remakes.
An album comprised of ballads cries out for diversity, and Renz Verano could certainly use some upbeat material. Nonetheless, Verano's fine voice and style make these songs listenable.
