With no one sure if The Black Crowes are on or off hiatus anytime soon, guitarist Rich Robinson puts the riffs he has kicking around to good use on his third studio album as a solo artist. As he's the heart and soul of The Black Crowes, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that album opener here, “I Know You,” immediately kicks up a Rolling Stones–like jam, complete with a piano tinkering in the back of the mix. “Down the Road” and “One Road Hill” follow with acoustic folk-rock that recalls the Stones and early-‘70s Led Zeppelin (“Ramble On”). With drummer Joe Magistro (who worked on Robinson’s previous solo albums and briefly toured with the Crowes) and keyboardist Marco Benevento, the trio worked out the songs in the relaxed environs of Woodstock, N.Y., where the pace of life recalls Robinson’s Southern roots. This magical sense inspires the entire album, turning a full-band blast like “This Unfortunate Show” into a vintage, old-style rock ’n’ roll jam and a gorgeous tune like “In Comes from the Night” into a slowly building epic.
