Richard Carr's When Soul & Heart Collide is an excellent collection of a variety of individual and often lyrical original compositions. Carr is a New Orleans-based composer/performer and his compositional repertoire is as diverse as the musical city from which he comes. When Soul & Heart Collide is a bit of an optimistic and moody record, but moody in a good and positive way. Comparisons could be made to George Winston, as Carr and Winston both do most of their work on solo piano, but Winston's work is much darker, and it wouldn't be fair to compare the two. In a lot of ways, Carr's work is reminiscent of David Lanz, or some of Keith Jarrett's more new age, improvisatory work. When Soul & Heart Collide is a fine record, and one that you will certainly enjoy if you love the sound of well-crafted compositions and solo piano.
