Guitarist Rick Derringer has led a bit of a journeyman career since his band the McCoys scored a number one hit in 1965 with "Hang On, Sloopy." Derringer was only 17 at the time and soon found himself opening for the entire Rolling Stones 1966 tour. After the McCoys split, he became a successful guitar slinger, playing with both Edgar and Johnny Winter before launching a solo career and scoring a major hit with "Rock 'n' Roll Hoochie Koo." Over the years he would find himself working with everyone from Alice Cooper to Cyndi Lauper, producing tracks for Weird Al Yankovic, and composing wrestler Hulk Hogan's entrance theme. The tracks on Sony Legacy's Playlist: The Very Best of Rick Derringer are culled mostly from his '70s solo heyday with the addition of the McCoys version of "Hang On, Sloopy" and a cut or two from the early '80s. As evidenced by some of the more pop-oriented tracks here, there was a lot more to this versatile artist than he's often given credit for.
