This early release from the Arbors label (a company which in the 1990s became one of jazz's best at documenting the current small-group swing scene) features the underrated Rick Fay on clarinet, tenor and soprano interacting with trombonist Dan Barrett (who is responsible for many of the arranged spots) and cornetist Ernie Carson. The music is unabashed dixieland with a few swing standards thrown in. The playing is consistently creative and exciting within the style with the highlights including "Oh Baby," a three-song ballad medley (particularly Barrett's Jack Teagarden-inspired playing on "Emaline"), "As Long As I Live" and a spirited "Lou-Easy-An-I-A." Ernie Carson's solos in particular are a constant joy.
