Details
[Edit]Ever since their 2004 eponymous debut, San Francisco’s Ride the Blinds have garnered constant comparisons to the Black Crowes and the Mother Hips (whom the power trio have shared many stages with). But upon first listen, it should be evident to anyone whose music collections predate the ‘90s that the bluesy band plays songs rooted in a larger spanning arc of late-‘60s and early-‘70s rock ‘n’ roll. “Grace Alley” tears the top off the album sounding like the sons of the James Gang. Brothers Bill Cramer (bass) and drummer Nick Cramer (drums) provide a well-oiled backbone of rhythmic chooglin’ for frontman/guitar player Chris Guthridge to unhinge some Joe Walsh-inspired leads as he croons in a high tenor reminiscent of “The Bomber” from the 1970 biker-rock opus James Gang Rides Again. The swampy strut of “Blue Skies for a While” recalls Dylan and the Band’s “Odds and Ends” from The Basement Tapes, while the raw tube-amp tone, descending chords and explosive open G-tuned leads of “Shine On” give a knowing nod to the Rolling Stones’ Let It Bleed.
