Details
[Edit]The guest list here is impressive: Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, Robert Randolph, Tom Morello and Trent Reznor all join the elder statesman from the Band for his first album since 1998’s Contact From the Underworld of Red Boy. Robertson’s voice, always a limited animal, is used for maximum effect, adding an earthy midnight growl to these expertly played tunes that are pure professionalism. There’s a solid R&B groove working through “The Right Mistake” with Winwood on the Hammond B-3. A strong blues bite kicks up the dust for “He Don’t Live Here No More” and “Fear of Falling.” There’s a bit of autobiography backing these tracks, as the old bar-band veteran remembers his days before Dylan plucked him out of obscurity and made him a star. “She’s Not Mine” is a touching love song. “Madame X” is surprisingly gentle, considering the inclusion of Trent Reznor. “Tango for Django” is a tribute to Django Reinhardt and “Axman” is a tribute to all the other guitar heroes in Robertson’s life.
