An entire generation of Rock and Roll guitarists, among them Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page, and Jeff Beck, studied Robert Johnson, and his records have had a colossal influence on the sound of American popular music. But beyond the hero worship that has retrospectively crowned Johnson “King of The Delta Blues” (an unlikely title considering the small number of recordings he left behind), lies a body of work of astounding virtuosity and staggering profundity that justifies his rank as one of the giants of American music. Though Charley Patton’s influence is clearly audible in Johnson’s fluid fingerpicking style, his warbling vocals are in a class of their own, and couldn’t sound more different from Patton’s deep-throated roar. Johnson’s works have been covered ad nauseam by his many admirers. If you recognize what's here from those covers, you owe it yourself to hear these spectacular songs in their original incarnations presented with excellent remastered sound.
