The Lamp is Low obviously is a "mood music" album; one expects this of harp records from the early to mid-1950s. And as such, Lamp is quite good. Unfortunately, music for bedtime reading (or smooching) is not the impish Maxwell's strength, and this is not one of his best albums. There are four originals, "Love By Candlelight," "Should I Believe You?," "Turkish Tango," and "Don't Let Me Love You," which with the title track are among the better cuts. But there is nothing very exceptional by Robert Maxwell standards (which are very high).
