Recorded in 1992, but not released until 2000, this recording features electric guitarist Lanfranco Malaguti with his quartet performing 12 Italian tunes, none of which were written by the band members and none of which are likely to be recognized by American ears. There is a pristine beauty to it all: the guitarist swinging gently, floating cautiously above bass and drums, while Stefano d'Anna's atmospheric tenor sax hovers above. The feel of romance is always there as the musicians merge their sound into an organic whole, usually avoiding empty emotionalism. Drummer Roberto Gatto proves once again why he is in so much demand, his beat always subordinating to the group sound. The stereotypical sunset on the cover hardly does this one justice, as the more substantial improvising by Malaguti and d'Anna, in particular, lends greater substance and sophistication to the whole. At times, d'Anna appears ready to let go, but he always reins it in to suit the mood, which is usually tenderly romantic.
