Roky Erickson’s fractured life carries over to his recording career, where his post–Thirteenth Floor Elevators albums eventually splinter into collections of varying quality. Gremlins Have Pictures, however, is a most endearing odds 'n' sods collection. It features an excellent cross-section of songs, from haunted, acoustic tunes (“I Have Always Been Here Before,” “Anthem (I Promise),” “Warning”) to the brutal live band performances of “Night of the Vampire,” “Sweet Honey Pie," and “Cold Night for Alligators.” What the set lacks in fidelity in spots it makes up for with inspired performances. These works include the highlights of Erickson’s recordings after his mental-hospital stay and in the days preceding the release of Don’t Slander Me. The collection's near-bootleg feel makes for a strangely appropriate document from a rock ‘n’ roll genius who's spent most of his life on the margins of society. Essential.
