Details
[Edit]Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin comes from a shakuhachi school of playing (the Jin Nyodo school) for which each sound, each note, must be the purest possible, with no extra techniques. You hear a simplicity, sometimes one that is disconcerting, which renders it better suited for meditative purposes. Also, what is interesting with this instrument is that the musician can use instruments of different lengths, thus, changing the character of the sound for a piece. Since the shakuhachi is not a transposing instrument, as is the case with Western instruments, in order to play in a different key or pitch, the musician must change instrument. This changes the sound; each shakuhachi can have its own sound quality or "personality," so to speak. Pure sound, pure music to meditate to. ~ Bruno DeschĂȘnes, Rovi
