A barrelhouse piano player whose approach to the blues was full of drive, bounce, and joy, Roosevelt Sykes recorded his signature tune, Lee Green's "44 Blues," at his debut studio date in 1929, a session arranged for him by St. Louis record shop owner Jesse Johnson, so this 1974 (when Sykes was 68 years old) live set from Webster College before a young and enthusiastic audience has the warmth and feel of a homecoming. Originally released in 1988 as a limited-edition LP, it features Sykes pounding the piano with his usual verve, telling stories and reminiscing between songs, and, of course, doing "44 Blues."
