Details
[Edit]Although Roscoe Chenier's self-titled debut album came out on Avenue Jazz and ended up in some jazz bins, the fact is that this isn't a jazz release — it's really a collection of electric blues, Fats Domino-influenced R&B, and classic '60s-type soul. The CD contains no jazz whatsoever, and it doesn't contain any zydeco either, despite the fact that the singer/guitarist is the second cousin of the late zydeco/blues great Clifton Chenier. But Roscoe Chenier doesn't need to embrace zydeco to make it clear that he's from Louisiana — the bayou influence comes through whether he's providing 12-bar blues on "Home Wrecker," "Losing the Only One You Love," and "Come on Home," or getting into a classic soul sound on "Just Because" and "You Don't Understand." As good as the album is, it didn't make Chenier well-known. But Roscoe Chenier is worth picking up if you come across a copy.
