Details
[Edit]The short-lived Amazing Stories was producer Steven Spielberg's attempt to revive the anthology format of past television classics like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits — in addition to Spielberg's longtime collaborator John Williams, the series also featured music from composers including Jerry Goldsmith and Georges Delerue, and while an earlier Varese Sarabande CD featured 1999 re-recordings of two Amazing Stories scores newly performed by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, this two-disc Intrada collection continues the specialty label's ongoing efforts to make available the original sessions. Goldsmith's austere, evocative "Boo!" suite is a clear highlight — teamed with regular collaborator Joe Dante, the composer stripped his arrangements of all contemporary artifice to create music firmly of a piece with his vintage Twilight Zone efforts. Also evoking film music's past is David Shire's tongue-in-cheek "Hell Toupee," which updates postwar monster movie scores to delightful effect. But Delerue's gorgeous "Dorothy and Ben" proves most memorable, with a thoughtfulness and poignancy rare in any medium, let alone television.
