[Edit]This seven-song EP nicely encapsulates all of Ryan Adams’ brilliance. With the genuine give and take of an excellent backing group in the Cardinals, Adams has a crisp, authentic sound. The Alice In Chains cover of “Down In a Hole” generates the most amusement since it takes a grunge dirge and twists it up into a country interloper. Cold Roses’s “If I Am a Stranger” is backed off its quick pace and turned into a sorrowful acoustic lament. “Dear John,” in alternate form on Jacksonville City Nights, aches with gorgeous country harmonies. The title track relies on Adams’ fragile voice. “My Love for You Is Real” is a great band effort with piano, lead guitar and harmonies that do the trick. “Blue Hotel,” the tune written for Willie Nelson, has a firm grip on Nelson’s somber side. “This Is It,” which previously appeared on Rock N Roll as a rigid, tough rocker, is here in a full band version that’s easy-going and engaging.
