[Edit]Boston's S.O.S. followed quickly from their 2003 demo and appearance on the Sweet Vision hardcore comp with this six-track debut EP, released by Perfect Victim Records in mid-2004. Possibly the band's most compelling quality (aside from its strangely Barbie-approved, baby-blue unicorn cover art) is actually the raw, classic flavor to its hardcore sound. Whether intentional or accidental, the earthy, analog-sounding production and ragged vocals adorning (or not adorning, as it were) this release are as crucial to the success of standouts "We Drown Because We Can," "The Block and the Rail," and "Intro to Nearism" (see cool, throbbing bass intro) as the songwriting itself. Thanks to this authentic and honest vibe, even more ambitiously melodic instrumental closer "Save Our Souls, Pt. 1" (at times reminiscent of the Police, strangely enough) is saved from ulterior motivations — a nice start.
