Details
[Edit]Anyone coming to Sade Adu’s fourth album, Love Deluxe, for more of the languid make-out music that’s made her a smooth-jazz favorite will be thrown for a loop. “No Ordinary Love” opens the record with a seven-minute plus groove that suggests heavy exposure to Massive Attack’s Blue Lines. That almost obsessive pulse carries over to the second cut, “Feel No Pain,” which also borrows Massive’s dystopian view of life. Hardly anything else here is as dark as that, but neither does Love Deluxe offer a particularly escapist vibe. “Bulletproof Soul” is a rueful evocation of a love affair’s end, with Sade not in the mood to be particularly kind. When the soft closing instrumental “Mermaid” kicks in, it provides a near comical sense of relief.
