[Edit]Back in the early '90s when groovy Madchester bands like The Stone Roses and Happy Mondays were battling with the squealing guitar feedback of more artful shoegazers like Ride and Chapterhouse, Saint Etienne’s brilliant debut album seemed to come out of nowhere. Foxbase Alpha played like a less campy Deee-Lite, with roots planted equally deep in Swinging London’s mod heyday and bubbly U.K. club pop. It didn’t hurt that chanteuse Sarah Cracknell was as easy on the eyes as on the ears. With her flirty coos, Saint Etienne's update of Neil Young’s “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” matched what Candyflip had recently done with The Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever.” Saint Etienne also helped put twee-pop pioneers The Field Mice on the indie map with an ambient house-infused rendition of that band's “Kiss and Make Up.” But digging even deeper into these album tracks, it’s evident that Saint Etienne’s originals trump its clever takes on other people’s songs. “Spring” grooves like Dusty Springfield strewn through a Britpop filter, while “Nothing Can Stop Us Now” is the album’s dazzling gem.
