Christmas LIVE (2009) is perhaps Sandi Patty's best-realized holiday project since 1995’s O Holy Night. The album (also released in DVD form) documents her annual Christmas concert tour in all its richly arranged glory, with Patty and her band augmented by a live orchestra and choir. Sandi’s Yuletide repertoire favors an assortment of carols and pop standards, served up with the blend of gospel fervor and Broadway panache that have become her trademarks. Her “Songs of Snow” medley is a particular pleasure to hear, moving at a brisk pace with a seasoning of light jazz. Highlights among the contemporary tunes found here include “The Prayer” (a thoughtfully reverent duet with husband Don Pesus) and “Someday” (a vivid invocation of the Nativity from Mary’s point of view). Throughout, Patty holds the stage with an easy elegance, befitting her stature as one of Christian music’s most beloved leading ladies. Christmas Live is a must-have release for confirmed Sandi fans and makes a sweet holiday offering for newcomers as well.
