[Edit]At eight songs deep, The Beachwood Canyon Sessions plays more like a mini-album than an EP. In the opening piano ballad, Sara Melson sings that she’s going to love her man like she’s never been hurt before. It's a big emotional leap from her 2008 album Dirty Mind, wherein the Angelino singer/songwriter wrote more than a few songs that revealed a fear of getting close and getting hurt. Her heart’s bravery extends into the following “Anywhere Anytime,” where she sings of the searing excitement that can only come from leaving one’s life in the dust on a moment’s notice to split town and embark on an unplanned adventure with a newfound love. In a cleaner and more confident reworking of “Feel It Coming,” it’s easier to believe her when she sings, “That’s it, I’m all better now/Spit out the last of what made me hurt.” Some twangy slide guitar seeps into “Hard Pressed,” a standout song that resonates with a palpable strength and empowering sentiment when Melson cleverly and stylishly reminds her jilting muse that he’s blowing it.
