An Atlanta group that's been putting out top-notch hip-hop since the mid-'90s, Scienz of Life are probably best known for their single "Yikes" with MF Doom. Leviathan is their fifth full-length, the follow-up to 2006's exceptional The Blaxploitation Sessions. Members John Robinson and ID 4 Windz are conscious without coming off preachy or corny, intent on serving up intelligent and thoughtful lyricism in an era where stereotypical ignorance still dominates the rap universe. Education and positivity are the main messages on display, set to left-field production that's an intoxicating mix of unpredictable drum programming, atmospheric electronics, and obscure sample selections. More suited for headphones than club rocking, the music here addresses our addiction to the digital world ("Touch Screen Queen"), escaping from the stagnating scene of rap buffoonery ("Break the Spell"), and the myriad of social problems facing our country today ("Oh America"). For those down with substantial wordplay and inventive production, this is for you.
