An intriguing cross between MercyMe and Maroon 5 made Gentle Revolution a pleasant surprise on the Christian landscape during what was dubbed "the year of the worship album." Scott Krippayne pooled some of the best pop songwriting to come along in years, drawing the likes of Steve Siler, Tony Wood and Mark Schultz as co-writers. While many contemporary Christian artists were releasing their takes on old-time hymns and worship standards, Krippayne forged ahead with a mature blend of catchy rhythms and funky guitar work. Tracks vary from dance inflections to rock anthems to soulful ballads. The title track refers to the Savior's effect on the world through His perfect life and teachings. Other songs contemplate acting as a Savior to others ("I Am Jesus"), our blatant imperfection before God ("Lyin'"), and daily renewals of faith ("Alive Again"). For a truly innovative pop song, "Something Different" lives up to its name with a build from ambient groove to full-blown dancehall celebration that brings to mind Jars of Clay's "Fade to Gray." "Renee" is a thought-provoking treatise on celebrities inspired by the singer's real-life sighting of Renee Zellweger in a Starbuck's on Sunset Boulevard. From start to finish, Krippayne gave more than ample reason to expect big things in his future with this rock-solid outing.
