[Edit]Backwards is the first part in the Antripodean series of releases on Extreme Records. The Antripodean series is a collection of works showcasing Australian artists who explore the boundaries of music. With Backwards, trumpeter Scott Tinkler abandons conventional harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic techniques in pursuit of great musical freedom. This solo adventure features the dissolution of his musical grammar and consciously symbolizes Tinkler's absolute command of his instrument. From glissandi to ostinato, the improvised music heard here is pure, atonal, and not for immature ears. The award-winning Tinkler is well-known on the Australian jazz scene for his brilliant improvisations and has graced stages with such respected players as Branford Marsalis, Joe Lovano, Cindy Blackman, and Billy Harper, among others. Recorded with no overdubs, no edits, and no processing, Tinkler's real time soloing is masterful on every track. However, the edgy cutting contests he holds with himself on "Duet for Fingers and Bell End," "Slam It Down Fast to Be a Solo Man," and "String Theory" stand out as the best of this sterling free jazz experience.
