Coming off the Love Songs for Robots EP and 1+1 = Heartache single, Australia's Sekiden rock out the power pop on Junior Fiction, the trio's debut full-length release. Sekiden nicely combine the new wave synth sensibilities they grabbed from '80s FM radio, and the crunch and hooks of guitar punk-pop of the '90s on Junior Fiction. Thick guitars and vocal harmonies weave with synths, punctuating melodies and hooks, giving a nod to the likes of the Beach Boys, the Muffs, Magnetic Fields, and Weezer. Catchy hooks continue song after song, like "1 +1 = Heartache," working better in the context of a full-length than an EP, and "Answering Machine," a laid-back track with a Buggles-esque chorus that keeps your interest deep into the album. Sekiden's Junior Fiction is fun pop for those boring summer dog days, getting you moving out of your cool, air-conditioned apartment and down to the beach for real sunny fun, flirting, and heartache.
