[Edit]From his early days with hardcore favorites Deep Wound through his work as a founding member of Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh, and Folk Implosion, Lou Barlow is an indie-rock icon and undisputed influence on countless other artists. His neurotic, self-obsessed, awkward/depressed singer/songwriter style sparked a generation of imitators, while his penchant for four-track recording helped inspire the lo-fi movement. Originally released in 1994 (and recorded between 1989 and 1993), Winning Losers showcases his highly personal bedroom folk jams and also sports an early version of the Sebadoh song "Really Insane." Defiantly minimalist and sonically murky at times, it's pretty much just Lou and a guitar, sounding off about life, love, and being a loser (but in a good way), all in short little songs that average about two minutes a pop. Don't miss "Rise Below Slowly," "Mellow, Cool," and "Losercore."
