[Edit]Enveloped in a thick vintage fidelity—replete with period-correct guitar and amp tones—Serpent Throne’s 2010 album plays as if it were tracked in the late '70s on a vacuum tube–driven mixing board. What’s even more impressive is how a Philadelphia-based instrumental heavy metal band boasts songs that are stronger and catchier than most tracks from groups with singers. The opening "Headed for an Unmarked Grave" could be mistaken for a Relentless–era Pentagram outtake without Bobby Liebling on the mic (which would be even more believable to anyone who's seen the harrowing documentary Last Days Here). The title track boasts the best lead guitar harmonies since Iron Maiden or Thin Lizzy, but the hard-chugging riffs and hard rock rhythm section keep it from crossing into New Wave of British Heavy Metal territory. As song titles like “March of the Druids” and “Pagan Eclipse” suggest, Serpent Throne has no reservations about delving into fantasy metal, though “Riff Forest” truly makes good on its name with an abundance of Sabbath-esque sludge.
