Irish fiddler and button accordion player Sharon Shannon had plunged headfirst into a wide variety of styles on her previous endeavors. On Live in Galway, she sticks to what she does best: traditionally rooted contemporary Celtic music. One of the album's most intriguing tracks is the quirky "Mouth of the Tobique" in which the band skitters and skips while changing tempo and rhythm, all in perfect unison. I honestly thought that my CD player was skipping, the musicianship is that exact and tight. Other highlights include the two-pronged attack of "Fire in the Bellies" and the gentle reel "The Mighty Sparrow." Some of the tracks are stripped down, with just Shannon on her instrument of choice, while others are with her full six-piece band, but all of them still hold the earnest thread that has earned her critical acclaim around the world.
