If you missed out in 2009 when the limited pressing of the mini-album Shlo-Fi by Bay Area beat wizard Shlohmo went out of print, the folks at Error Broadcast have your back. Now reissued with a clean remaster and five extra remixes, Shlo-Fi has never sounded better. “Couch” opens with ambient tones moving like windchimes over the dusty fidelity of old vinyl records and spoken-word samples. It’s followed with a movement in two parts: “For You, Pt. 1” and “For You, Pt. 2.” The former loops a mantra of trance-inducing notes above crisp beats that play like a sleepy percussionist nodding off at the snare drum. In the second part, Shlohmo layers ambient soundscapes over one another to provide a womblike comfort of dreamy textures. When the beats make their way in, they sound sporadically sprinkled, making for an unpredictable listening experience. The Soosh remix of “Couch” is a standout that sounds warbled and haunted—as if My Bloody Valentine’s Kevin Shields had found a way to incorporate his guitar's floating tremolo bar with a turntable.
