With Family Man, he's back in the country arena, letting his natural voice enjoy a run with a backing group he's dubbed The Triple Crown. Hints of his father Waylon's musical legacy can be heard in the perfectly arranged "The Deed and the Dollar" and in the spirited "The Long Road Ahead," which features Eleanor Whitmore's harmony vocals and mandolin and Tom Morello's guitar. "Summer Dreams (Al's Song)" catches the simple, modestly adorned beauty of a '70s outlaw-country ballad. Jennings stays true to his father's style, recording country music that retains the music's purest flavorings without indulging modern country music's need for bigger, sweetened sounds.
