A producer/singer from Toronto, Slakah the Beatchild sports an intoxicating sound that melds hip-hop and R&B while avoiding the clichés that dominate both genres. Refreshingly original, he wisely avoids both throwback retro-soul mimicry and modern-day computerized chicanery, instead bringing his own instantly likeable style; it brings to mind elements of Dilla, Count Bass D, classic Pharcyde, D'Angelo, and Dwele. Crackshot soul-jazz live instrumentation comes from his group The Slakadeliqs, and we get some outstanding vocal features from Spek Won, Glenn Lewis, Tanika Charles, and Ian Kamau. He's already a star in his native Canada (where he won a Juno Award for his 2009 hit "Sunglasses" with Divine Brown); it's only a matter of time before Slakah blows up in the States too. Everything here is great, but "Byram's Groove (Cut a Rug)," "Miscommunication," "Love Fool," and "Someone Like That" are especially nice.
