Details
[Edit]Sylvester Stewart, better known as Sly Stone, led one of the most groundbreaking bands of the '60s, Sly & the Family Stone, who combined the deep grooves of funk and R&B with the power of rock and created a sound that made them one of the most popular and influential acts of the day, topping the record charts and stealing the show at Woodstock. In 1963, before Sly's group took off, he became a staff producer at an independent Bay Area label, Autumn Records. This collection features 21 rare early sides from his tenure at Autumn, which ended in 1966 when the label went out of business, and before the group signed with Epic Records in 1967, scoring their first hit with "Dance to the Music" in 1968. This set is short on hits, but offers a fascinating glimpse into the earliest days of Sly & the Family Stone as they were perfecting a formula that would set the world on fire.
