[Edit]The consummate studio pro decides its time to show the stay-at-home audience what they've been missing. Recorded in Norway and Brooklyn during his 2011 tour, Bootlegs surveys his entire career, adding excitement and energy where in the studio he crafted precision. The give-and-take between band and singer is never better than on "Airport Taxi Reception," where the drummer drives the tunes into a frenetic jam that's halfway between Talking Heads and a downtown No Wave NYC band back in 1980. "Domino" turns the ballad into a loose and exciting mid-tempo where Lerche reaches falsetto notes while the audience appreciates his delicate feat. "Sleep On Needles" and "Phantom Punch" percolate like Lerche's found his way into the soul of Elvis Costello, circa 1978, and his band have become the Attractions (without a signature keyboardist). The song choices are solid and the performances are raw and exciting. What more can one ask from a live album? The Bonus Track Version adds the highly desirable, "It's Never Meant to Be."
