Britain’s Soul Jazz label has a sterling reputation for assembling collections of material with a curatorial sense of purpose. This double-length collection also accompanies a book of the same title. On Black Fire!, the label turns to the politically inspired jazz of the Civil Rights era and after that pushes into avant-garde, Latin, bebop, groove, and global sounds. Some names are obvious (Yusef Lateef, Archie Shepp, Don Cherry, Last Poets, Joe Henderson), while others will be a revelation (Tyrone Washington, Creative Arts Ensemble, David Lee Jr.). All are worth investigation, with or without the book.
